The State Theater: A LiberationBySound Field Trip/Audio sneak preview!

• October 12th, 2010

Before the State Theater in downtown Portland reopens it's doors on October 15, 2010, DJ Roy got to sneak underneath the velvet ropes last weekend to take in the storied concert and movie venue. As longtime residents know, the State has had many ups and downs before closing it's doors in 2006. It's last incarnation as a live music venue with bands such as the Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth, David Byrne, Wilco, Sigur Ros, and Portland's own Cerberus Shoal gave Portland incredible memories of some of the coolest eclectic acts around. DJ Roy looks at the past and peers into the future of the State.  With help from general manager Lauren Wayne, everyone is now invited to join in and take in this audio sneak preview of the State Theater with LiberationBySound's newest podcast.

Sydney Bourke [Marie Stella] on ‘Trust’ EP @ LBS Radio 6/8/10

• June 11th, 2010

Among a crop of neat local Portland indie bands coming out with albums this summer, kids in particular have been waiting for Marie Stella to come out with this one for a while. It's finally coming out this Saturday [6/12/10] and Sydney Bourke, who fronts the band, visited LBS radio this past Tuesday [6/8/10] to talk about their debut EP entitled 'Trust'.

They're debuting the album in a different, out of the ordinary way : at the new Bayside Bowl on 58 Alder St in the Bayside neighborhood of Portland, Maine.  Rocking and bowling -there's some good fun noise to emerge. They'll be joined by Dead Man's Clothes (on Portland's Eternal Otter Records) and The Art of Shooting (coming in from Brooklyn). Doors @ 8pm.

[MP3 version] Theodore Treehouse LIVE @ LBS radio 3/30/10

• May 25th, 2010

Some had trouble with downloading the Theodore Treehouse podcast (it was encoded in a M4a) so here's the mp3 version. It doesn't have the chapter markers, so it's straight up 26 minutes of Theodore Treehouse. The songs they performed at WMPG on May 30th 2010 were:

Maple Syrup Moon

Big Monsters

Two Hands

Intergalactic Space Travel (In Your Mind)

Two Hearts

Enjoy!  BTW: 2 more Liberation By Sound Radio podcasts are on the way including Dark Dark Dark LIVE @ LBS 3/30/10 and Kaki King (she didn't perform but hung out with us and chatted about her new album and tour).

Finally -Theodore Treehouse LIVE @ LBS Radio

• May 21st, 2010

From the 3/30/10 broadcast of Liberation By Sound Radio

These guys (and one gal) are simply brilliant. This is a band I really think could make waves far outside the boundaries of Southern Maine.

NOTE: the recordings on this podcast are fairly decent, but far from perfect. Still, it reflects the energy and intensity of their shows.

Darlene Huntress No on 1 post election on Lesbian Radio

• November 4th, 2009

Darlene Huntress of Equality Maine talks with WMPG's Lesbian Radio host Deb Gallagher Nov 4 on the veto of the gay marriage law in yesterday's Maine election. She is down but not out. "...There's something different that motivates you when you are asking permission to be a human being..."

In an excerpt from today's interview, Darlene weighs in on what accounted for the loss, gives props to the thousands of volunteers and tells supporters to chin up, "Everybody needs to rest, lick their wounds --the other side wins if we just stay silent and go back into the closet."

"Our biggest mistake would be to become so apathetic or so devastated by the loss, or to give up on the people that live in this state and not continue and move forward."  More from Darlene Huntress on this podcast.  Thanks to Deb Gallagher of Lesbian Radio (Wed 1-1:30PM @ wmpg.org)  for permission to use excerpts from today's interview.

Liberation By Sound podcasting -whoa!

• October 14th, 2009

Man, I feel like I've re-entered the 21st century...yet again!  I last felt that after joining twitter, then again when I joined facebook. Yes, I know it's 2009 already, so to get with the times, Liberation By Sound radio [@WMPG] is presenting for the first time -on demand digital radio ( monster truck rally echo for dramatic radio effect ! ).   Liberation by Sound continues it's ongoing experiment in destroying corporate radio on WMPG Tuesday 3-5 pm EST on www.WMPG.org and 90.9+104.1 in Portland, Maine.

So for the first podcast, it's the last 25 minutes of LBS radio on 10.13.09 with Spencer Albee and Evan & Whitney from the No on 1 campaign, talking up the HELL No on 1 concerts @ Empire Dine and Dance in Portland.  Portland musicians are getting together 10.17 and 10.18 to support the No on 1 campaign, the Nov 3 election issue that will preserve gay marriage in Maine.  Maine became the 5th state in the U.S. to grant gay/lesbian marraige last spring, but a voter initiative by religious right wing organizations are seeking to ban gay marriages once again.  The podcast includes 2 songs by Spencer and the School Spirit Mafia and 1 song by Dominic and the Lucid.

More podcasts on the way...I'm thinking if I get permission from Ani DiFranco, I'll have my interview with her from April '09 as a podcast, as well as interviews and music from local Portland musicians and record label companies. Oh yeah, I did an interview with Dr. Oliver Fein, head of Physicians for a Nation Health Program, the largest Single Payer Universal Healthcare advocacy group, who had just spoken to President Obama last spring -that'll be another podcast as it's still a very topical issue now.

Feedback is always very welcome - I would implore you to give some!

Peace!

DJ Roy
